El Valle de Anton – the largest inhabited volcanic crater in the world

El Valle de Anton is one of the most beautiful areas in Panama. Nature lovers will get their money's worth here. The village of El Vallé is located in the middle of an extinct volcanic crater and the landscape left behind by the volcano is simply beautiful.

El Valle Shield

El Valle de Anton is only a 2-hour drive from the capital Panama City and is therefore very popular with locals and tourists. The area is located in the highlands

Panama, in the Provic Coclé and offers you a place to cool off on your Panama trip thanks to its mild temperatures.

Hiking in El Valle de Anton

Hiking enthusiasts will definitely get their money's worth here. You can either go on your own or book a guided tour. The peaks of La India Dormina, Caerro Gaital, Cerro Cara Iguana and Cerro La Silla offer a wonderful and unique view.

Many hostels also organize sunrise hikes.

Unfortunately, it wasn't possible with small children (at least for us). El Valle is located in the crater of the volcano and so you always have to cross the crater first. So we simply explored the area in a rental car and got a wonderful view from the crater rim.

Zip Lining in El Valle de Anton

Zip-lining at Churro Macho Waterfall
Churro Macho

The zip lining in Anton El Valle was my (Kevin) personal highlight. Especially along the Churro Macho waterfall. This offers an incomparable adventure for anyone who is looking for a thrill and wants to experience the beauty of nature from a unique perspective. You are taken on a breathtaking journey through the lush landscape of the rainforest. As you whizz from platform to platform, you have the opportunity to explore the rainforest from a bird's eye view. The fresh, clean air and the breathtaking view of the surrounding nature offer a complete immersion in the beauty of Panama. My tour started at 10:00 a.m., so I was able to see a sloth and observe various species of birds.

TIP: The tour is not suitable for small children, so I did it alone and Maria visited the market in El Valle with the children. However, there is a small circular path along the waterfall that we all walked together.

Waterfalls in and around Anton El Vallé

Attention! Waterfall lovers will get their money's worth here. The area in and around Anton El Vallé offers a variety of waterfalls.

Churro Macho: This is probably the most famous waterfall in El Valle. It is about 35 meters high and is located in a protected natural area. There is also a hanging bridge from which you can get a great view of the waterfall.

Chorro Las Mozas: This waterfall is a little smaller but still very beautiful. It is known for its two pools where you can swim.

Chorro La Pintada: This waterfall is a bit more remote and less visited, making it a perfect place for those looking for peace and nature.

Chorro Los Chorros: These are actually two waterfalls located next to each other. They are surrounded by lush vegetation and offer a refreshing swim.

Chorro El Espino: This waterfall is a little harder to reach, but it is worth the effort. It is surrounded by stunning scenery and offers a tranquil and peaceful experience.

Butterfly Farm - El Mariposario

The butterfly farm is located in a side street near the market. The butterfly farm in El Valle de Anton, also known as "El Mariposario", is a wonderful place to observe a variety of butterfly species in their natural environment. In addition to the large number of butterflies, plant lovers also get their money's worth. You can find all kinds of tropical plants and flowers at the butterfly farm. A highlight for young and old.

El Valle Market

The market in El Valle de Anton, often referred to as "El Valle Market," is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The market is located in the center of town and is easy to find. At the market, you'll find a variety of goods including fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade jewelry, traditional Panamanian crafts, and more.

TIP: Don't forget to bring cash as many vendors do not accept credit cards.

Conclusion:

As we wrote at the beginning, El Valle de Anton is one of the most beautiful areas on our trip to Panama. It is a charming village located in an extinct volcanic crater. Hello!!! Who can say they lived in a volcanic crater :-) The fresh mountain air, the natural beauty and the rich wildlife make this place a highlight.
